What are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are a proven method of restoring the function, integrity and structure of a damaged tooth. They are usually needed when your tooth has been compromised with a cavity, which could be resultant of a weak tooth, poor dental hygiene or a diet high in sugar and carbonated drinks.

Your dentist will be able to tell if you need a filling by examining the condition of your teeth or by taking any necessary x-rays.

How Can You Tell if You Need a Tooth Filling?

Dental fillings are the perfect example of why regular dental check-ups are imperative, as they don’t always come with symptoms. If you just need a small filling, you may not notice any tooth pain or discomfort, however common symptoms include:

  • Any pain or sensitivity in a concentrated area, which will be at its worst when you’re eating or drinking.
  • A visible hole in your tooth that you can either see when you open your mouth in the mirror or feel when you run your tongue or finger across your teeth. You might also notice that part of your floss tends to break when you hit a certain spot or food is regularly getting stuck in a particular part of your mouth.

You should also book an appointment with your dentist if an old filling has gotten loose or fallen out, as it will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

How Many Types of Tooth Fillings are There?

At Woodvale Dental Surgery, we specialise in three types of fillings, composite, amalgam and porcelain.

Composite (White) Fillings

Made from natural, tooth-coloured resins, composite fillings are more aesthetically pleasing than some of their traditional counterparts, as they can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.

Amalgam (Silver) Fillings

This type of filling is silver because it’s made from an amalgamation of a few different metals. While these are more noticeable than composite fillings, they are highly resistant to wear and tear and are the perfect option for teeth that are located near the back of your mouth.

Porcelain Fillings

Durable and highly-resistant to discolouration and staining, porcelain fillings (also known as inlays and onlays) are made using advanced dental technology and are bonded to your natural tooth. They are extremely durable and are designed to match the colour of your teeth, giving you a healthier, natural looking smile.

When you visit our Woodvale-based dental clinic, we’ll run through each of your options in more detail, to make sure we find the solution that’s right for you!
